New York spot gold fell $27.20 to $2,027.10 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 6.18 points to 558.24 while the TSX gold index shed 8.93 points to 265.76. Most Canadian gold miners moved lower with bullion, but Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) was one of the hardy few to buck the trend. It gained 10 cents to $17.10 on 479,000 shares. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) helped lead the retreat, dropping 35 cents to $8.85 on 22,000 shares.

Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) outdid McEwen, but it had news today. Barrick fell $2.08 to $21.55 on 10.32 million shares on word it estimates it produced and sold 4.05 million attributable ounces of gold last year. That, Barrick says, was "consistent with our forecast as guided in our third quarter release." Fantastic, you say -- Barrick hit its guidance -- but no: The company's 2023 guidance called for between 4.2 million and 4.6 million ounces. What Barrick's production was consistent with was a comment in its November news that said, "gold production is forecast to be marginally below the low end of the company's annual guidance range."
