New York spot gold fell $1.40 to $2,018.50 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.69 point to 550.86 while the TSX gold index lost 1.67 points to 260.89. Most Canadian gold miners moved little today, but Gregory Lang's Novagold Resources Inc. (NG) continued its downward trek, dropping 20 cents to $3.80 on 543,000 shares. A week ago, Novagold closed at $4.80, but since then the company has rolled out its 2023 annual report and reminded the market of its perseverance -- and hence its bureaucratic woes -- with the mammoth Donlin gold project in Alaska.

George Sookochoff's Belmont Resources Inc. (BEA) gave up 1.5 of its few remaining pennies, ending the day at 3.5 cents on 1.49 million shares following one of those market rarities -- Friday assays. The company has initial results of its nine-hole, 2,000-metre drill program on the A-J project in Southern British Columbia. The first five holes of the program tested the North zone, largely untested open ground at targets between the Golden Crown and Athelstan-Jackpot mines. The final four holes probed the Athelstan area, seeking feeder zones along and directly below the old mine.
