New York spot gold fell $19.70 Friday, closing at $2,496.50. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 5.06 points to 545.22 while the TSX gold index shed 7.96 points to 344.83. Most Canadian-listed gold miners retreated today. Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) lost 39 cents to $8.68 on 1.43 million shares while Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN) fell 54 cents to $11.47 on 9.26 million shares. Bright lights were few, but First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) did add 13 cents to $14.13 on 3.47 million shares.

Derek White's Ascot Resources Ltd. (AOT) crashed 25.5 cents to 18.5 cents on 35.24 million shares on word that it is putting its Premier gold mine in northwestern British Columbia on care and maintenance temporarily to complete additional mine development at the Big Missouri deposit. The problem, the company says, is that development at Big Missouri is "one to two months" -- two, in other words -- behind schedule, and because of the previous delay in starting a ramp at Premier Northern Lights (PNL), production from that area has been delayed as well.
