New York spot gold rose $27.30 Thursday, closing at $2,585.50. The TSX Venture Exchange added 6.51 points to 582.72 while the TSX gold index rose 2.64 points to 372.71. Most Canadian gold miners advanced today, some with enthusiasm. One of them was Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN), which added $1.17 to $19.10 on 6.16 million shares. Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU) on the other hand fell five cents to $1.97 on 198,000 shares.

Sharyn Alexander and Brian Lock's Sun Summit Minerals Corp. (SMN) rose one cent to 17 cents on 402,000 shares. This follows word it has drilled a 43.5-metre near-surface interval grading 1.4 grams of gold and 1.1 grams of silver per tonne from one of the first three holes completed in an "inaugural exploration program" at its JD project in the Toodoggone district of north-central British Columbia. The three holes, which probed the Creek zone, also yielded an at-surface hit of 0.7 gram of gold per tonne over 95.5 metres in a second test and 1.64 grams per tonne over 29.1 near-surface metres in a third.
