New York spot gold gained $31.80 to $3,353.60 on Wednesday as the TSX Venture Exchange added 4.22 points to 721.52. The TSX gold index moved higher with bullion, adding 4.66 points to 490.25 as most diamond miners listed in Canada gained some altitude. Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG), down yesterday in silence, quietly moved higher today, adding $1.27 to $26.01 on 405,000 shares. Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) also did well, adding 4.5 cents to 32 cents on 103,000 shares.

There were a few taking hits today, but they were driven lower by news. West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) slid 6.5 cents to 85 cents on 4.37 million shares. It had nothing directly material to say beyond the re-election of its board at yesterday's annual meeting, but perhaps something said at the meeting spooked the market. (Mind you, as often as not, investors spook themselves.)

Another taking a hit was Aya Gold & Silver Corp. (AYA), which slid $1.33 to $13.19 on 4.5 million shares. Aya said late yesterday that it was selling 7.49 million shares at $13.35 apiece in a bought-deal financing. Early this morning, it boosted the sale to $125-million. The underwriters have the usual greenshoe option through which they can sell an additional $18.75-million of shares, which would bring the full placement to $143.75-million. The cash, the company says, will aid its exploration at Zgounder and Boumadine.
