New York spot gold rose $33.40 Monday, closing at $3,306.20. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 9.11 points to 733.37 while the TSX gold index added 11.57 points to 495.43. Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA) did well, although in limited trading, as it added nine cents to $1.26 on 264,000 shares, while the far more popular New Gold Inc. (NGD) gained 24 cents to $6.77 on 4.12 million shares. Gold miners with copper kickers moved lower today. Hudbay Minerals Inc. (HBM) lost two cents to $14.45 on 2.09 million shares.

Matt Roma's Golden Cross Resources Inc. (AUX) lost three cents to 63 cents on 483,000 shares. The company's proposed $3-million private placement morphed into a $5-million offering late last week because of -- promoters gush these words at every opportunity -- "significant demand" for the 11.11 million shares now on offer at 45 cents apiece. The cash, the company glows, will be used to accelerate drilling and development of its Reedy Creek gold project in Victoria, Australia.
