New York spot gold fell $9.20 on Thursday, closing at $3,336.70. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 4.85 points to 791.66 while the TSX gold index slid 3.44 points to 493.89. Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS) was in retreat, dropping 54 cents to $39.05 on 1.1 million shares today, while Allied Gold Corp. (AAUC) fell 15 cents to $17.98 on 396,000 shares. Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) was northbound, adding one cent to 35 cents on 67,000 shares.
What goes up usually comes down, especially when it is lugging a boulder-sized Pebble uphill. Ronald Thiessen's Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (NDM) crashed to a morning low of just $1.40 before ending the day down 91 cents to $2.23 on 18.86 million shares. There was no news, and the stock tripped its circuit breaker four times early on, with the exchange patiently resetting it after the obligatory five-minute time-out -- much like a housewife impatiently wanting to run her hair dryer and air conditioner on the same low-amperage circuit.
