New York spot gold, which threatened the $4,400 mark with a menacing stare early Friday, then slumped briefly below $4,200, is glowering again today, as it added $102.60 to pause at $4,353.40. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) jumped 41 cents to $19.17 on 8.2 million shares on word it is acquiring Northern Superior Resources Inc. (SUP). Northern's shareholders will get 19 cents and 0.0991 of an Iamgold share for each of their shares -- a 27-per-cent premium that sent Northern up 76.5 cents to $2.18 on 43.12 million shares.
Renaud Adams, Iamgold's president and chief executive officer, cheered that the addition of Northern's assets in the Chibougamau district is "extremely exciting" and aligns with his company's strategy to become a "leading Canadian-focused mid-tier gold producer, bolstering [its] organic pipeline in Quebec." (Northern Superior has over four million ounces of gold delineated in the district, complementing Iamgold's 8.3 million ounces in the area.)
