New York spot gold rose $1.70 to $4,212.30 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 12.66 points to 959.23 while the TSX gold index added 22.51 points to 795.30. Most precious metals miners moved northward, some with enthusiasm. Taseko Mines Ltd. (TKO) was one of them, as it added 95 cents to $10.47 on 3.42 million shares in silence. Equally mum and also northbound was Novagold Resources Inc. (NG), which added 63 cents to $10.49 on one million shares.

Benoit La Salle's Aya Gold & Silver Inc. (AYA) was also an energetic gainer on the heels of its annual meeting, adding $1.82 to $26.13 on 1.7 million shares. Aya's eight board nominees were approved, although a few -- notably Mr. La Salle, president and chief executive officer -- faced some grumpiness. (In his case, one-ninth of the shares voted were cast against him.) Aya's new chairman, Ghislane Guedira, also faced electoral headwinds, as did Yves Grou. On the other hand, director John Burzynski was deemed saintly, as 99.97 per cent of the shares voted gave him the nod. It has been a good year to be a shareholder, as last spring an Aya share cost just $11.45.
