New York spot gold added $71.20 to $4,078.30 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 23.30 points to 873.07 while the TSX gold index gained 35.51 points to 738.05. Silver X Mining Corp. (AGX) did well, adding nine cents to 69 cents on 2.99 million shares on the quiet. Serabi Gold PLC (SBI), on the other hand, dropped 14 cents to $5.05 on 79,000 shares.
It never rains but it pours -- or in this case, snows. The Lundin family's Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN) jumped $2.04 to $36.19 on 5.29 million shares on word that a severe winter snowstorm has forced the company to suspend mining at its Candelaria mine because of heavy rain, and all operations at its Caserones mine because of heavy snow. (The two mines, you see, are in Chile and in the mountains.) Caserones will be back running as soon as power is restored, the company says.
With the mill still running at Candelaria the impact is minimal, and in any case, worry not: Lundin Mining says it included the chances of weather disruptions in its production guidance, so it remains on track to hit its guidance, unless the event persists. And so, the weather forecast comes into play: The storm is weakening and precipitation should taper off over the next day or two. More storms are possible, but they look to be significantly weaker, so keep your fingers crossed.
