New York spot gold dropped $53.40 to $4,049.10 Friday, keeping comfortably within its newfound range after a year of hefty oscillations that saw it leap from $3,500 an ounce to $5,500 an ounce. Bullion last topped $4,200 in a meaningful way over a month ago, while incursions below $4,000 an ounce since then have been narrow, brief and sporadic. The TSX Venture Exchange dropped 8.37 points to 867.13 while the TSX gold index retreated 24.07 points to 735.61.

Most gold miners bugled retreat today, although a few did not get the dispatch. One of those still northbound today was Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA), which added one cent to 68 cents on 186,000 shares in silence. New Found Gold Corp. (NFG) fell eight cents to $1.90 on 1.27 million shares today, while Centerra Gold Inc.(CG) dropped $1.57 to $24.10 on 1.26 million shares.

Ross Beaty's Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) lost 63 cents to $12.56 on 27.8 million shares today on word that it has completed its merger with Orla Mining Ltd. (OLA). Orla, not yet formally delisted, dropped 63 cents to $12.54 on 8.54 million shares today. The expanded Equinox, which is expected to produce about 1.1 million ounces of gold annually, touts "a clear path to more than 1.9 million ounces as its high-quality North American growth projects are developed."
