New York spot gold flopped $147.40 Friday, ending the week at $4,453.50. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 14.93 points to 989.16 while the TSX gold index slid 33.90 points, ending the day at 988.58. Analysts cited stubborn inflation in the United States -- the stench of tariffs still in the air -- prompting expectations of rising interest rates. China Gold International Resources Corp. (CGG) was nevertheless strong, adding 92 cents to $46.32 on 225,000 shares. Barrick Mining Corp. (ABX), on the other hand, fell $2.05 to $63.54 on 7.21 million shares and Mining Americas Inc. (MAI) lost 41 cents to $6.22 on 502,000 shares.

Denis Laviolette's Pirate Gold Corp. (YARR) has drilled a 1.35-metre near-surface zone grading 30.6 grams of gold per tonne in a southern extension of the Eastern Trend area of Moosehead, on its Treasure Island project in central Newfoundland. Assays from drilling downplunge in the Western Trend area also made the highlight reel, with 4.25 grams of gold per tonne across 6.65 metres. Most of that gold -- 40.8 grams per tonne -- sat in a 0.5-metre sliver.
