West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery lost 46 cents to $66.52 on the New York Merc, while Brent for September lost 50 cents to $68.71 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.40 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.00. Natural gas for August added six cents to $3.52. The TSX energy index lost 2.55 points to close at 269.71.

The oil patch saw the first green shoots of quarterly reporting season thanks to perennial early bloomer PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. (PSK), up 56 cents to $24.13 on 1.5 million shares. (PrairieSky is not a direct oil and gas producer, but collects royalties from producers across Western Canada, providing a useful gauge of industry activity.) The company reported second quarter royalty production of 26,500 barrels of oil equivalent a day and cash flow of 41 cents a share. Both figures were ahead of analysts' predictions of 25,600 barrels a day and 38 cents a share -- all in all, an encouraging start to the season.
