West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery added seven cents to $61.05 on the New York Merc, while Brent for January added 12 cents to $64.89 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.40 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.30. Natural gas for December added 14 cents to $4.26. The TSX energy index added a fraction of a point to close at 287.21.
Oil prices held their ground in the wake of yesterday's OPEC+ meeting, in which the group announced a modest production hike of 136,000 barrels a day for December, but added that it would pause hikes for January, February and March. It also "reaffirmed the importance of adopting a cautious approach and retaining full flexibility to continue pausing or reverse" its increases. Here in Canada, energy investors prepared for another busy week of financials, with third quarter reports expected this week from Suncor Energy Inc. (SU: $55.68), Paramount Resources Inc. (POU: $23.32), Vermilion Energy Inc. (VET: $10.54), ARC Resources Ltd. (ARX: $25.86), Spartan Delta Corp. (SDE: $6.54) and more.
