West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery added $1.71 to $61.07 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March added $1.82 to $65.88 (all figures in this para U.S.). Both benchmarks notched a weekly gain -- their fifth in a row -- on renewed fears of Iranian and Russian supply disruptions. Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $17.20 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.90. Natural gas for February added 23 cents to $5.27, for a 70-per-cent weekly gain, its largest since 2005. The TSX energy index added 3.71 points to close at 325.10.

Oil sands giant Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) added 89 cents to $69.61 on 6.49 million shares, despite ending the week on a tragic note. Barely two weeks after boasting that 2025 saw its "best-ever safety results for the third consecutive year," Suncor is now in the news for a workplace death at its Fort Hills oil sands mine. A contractor was inside a piece of heavy machinery when it sank into muskeg on Jan. 13. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is investigating the incident, which Suncor says may have been caused by a medical event.
