West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery added $3.59 to $93.89, while Brent for July added $3.44 to $99.58 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.70 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.10. Natural gas for June lost two cents to $2.89. The TSX energy index added 1.41 points to close at 424.80.

Oil prices rose as the U.S. military carried out fresh strikes on Iranian targets in what it described as defensive actions. Here in Canada, the countdown is on to what Ottawa is billing as a major LNG (liquefied natural gas)-related announcement tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT. The announcement will be made by federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and will be related to "international energy exports," said a brief media advisory this morning, without further details. Bloomberg was quick off the mark with reports that Canada will sign a deal to supply Germany with LNG from the proposed $10-billion Ksi Lisims export terminal on the B.C. coast.
