Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $17.50 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.30. Natural gas for August added five cents to $2.91. The TSX energy index added 7.66 points to close at 409.15.
Support across Canada for a new West Coast oil pipeline is on the rise. A new Angus Reid poll conducted from July 10 to 14 showed that 63 per cent of survey respondents support or strongly support the proposed Alberta-to-B.C. pipeline that the Alberta government unveiled on July 2. Only 23 per cent oppose or strongly oppose the pipeline, while the remainder were undecided. By comparison, a previous Angus Reid poll in October, 2025, showed 59-per-cent support and 26-per-cent opposition.
Notably, the pro-pipeline side now includes 62-per-cent support among British Columbians, up from 56 per cent in the October survey. This increase comes with an asterisk: The October survey had asked about a northern route for the pipeline (which would have required overturning the federal tanker ban), whereas the Alberta government ultimately decided on a southern route largely tracking the existing Trans Mountain system. In the new poll, two-fifths of British Columbians cited the new route as a "compelling reason to support the project." Yet overhanging it all is an even larger asterisk. Opinions on the pipeline are far from set in stone, with more than half (53 per cent) of all survey respondents saying they could change their minds.
