West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery lost $3.22 to $89.38, while Brent for November lost $2.69 to $102.59 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $21.80 to WTI, up from a discount of $25.00. Natural gas for November (new front month) lost nine cents to $3.01. The TSX energy index lost 5.54 points to close at 435.45.
Oil prices headed lower as crude exports from the Middle East showed signs of recovery. In other supply news, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will loan up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), completing the U.S. contribution toward a co-ordinated release announced in March by the International Energy Agency (IEA). U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that the United States and Japan have been delivering on their commitments under the IEA agreement, but that "several European member countries have released only a fraction" of what they pledged, and scolded them to do better.
