The S&P/TSX Cannabis Index added a fraction to 40.61, while the CSE Composite Index lost 3.67 to 276.84. South of the border, cannabis reform advocates got the giggles as a new bill appeared in the U.S. House of Representatives, entitled the Developing and Nationalizing Key Cannabis Research Act. It quickly picked up the nickname "the DANK bill" in cannabis circles, as the initials of the first four words spell a slang term related to marijuana potency. The bill did not provide a suggested abbreviation, leaving it unclear (though, on balance, likely) that the authors intended such an evocative name.
More importantly, the bill is bipartisan (filed by the Democrat Scott Peters and the Republican Dave Joyce) and would establish a federal cannabis research program and allow universities to conduct cannabis studies with federal grants. Institutions could apply to become "centres of excellence" in cannabis research. They could then receive federal funding for "interdisciplinary research related to cannabis and other biomedical, behavioural and social issues related to cannabis."
