The S&P/TSX Cannabis Index added 2.71 to 43.32, while the CSE Composite Index added 2.32 to 279.16. South of the border, cannabis circles were abuzz after a high-profile U.S. senator said he was "open to compromises" on incremental federal reform. Senator Cory Booker, who last year vowed to "lay myself down" to block any lawmakers who tried to introduce non-comprehensive cannabis reform, is now walking back his opposition.
"Look, I'm a compromise guy," the New Jersey senator said in an interview published by NJ Spotlight News on Friday. He added, "New Jersey sent me here to get things done -- not to make stands where I made good points but don't pass bills." The bill that he would most prefer to pass is the one that he is co-sponsoring with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Ron Wyden, the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA). Mr. Booker called this the "gold standard bill" for its language on legalization and social reform. As the CAOA is generally considered to have no chance of survival, however, Mr. Booker is now signalling openness to passable, piecemeal bills as well.
