Globe/wire say TSX enjoys strong September

2024-10-01 09:24 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Wall Street closed its latest winning month and quarter with more records on Monday while Canada's main stock index wrapped up its strongest quarter in four years with a minor gain. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says that the drift higher for U.S. and Canadian stocks followed a wild start to the week for financial markets in Asia, where Japanese stocks tumbled and Chinese indexes soared. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 43.55 points to close at 24,000.37 after a late rally took it into positive territory. For the month, the Canadian index rose 2.8 per cent, while it was up 9.7 per cent in the third quarter. U.S. Treasury yields rose after investors took comments from Fed chair Jerome Powell as a hint that coming cuts to interest rates may be more traditional in size. Japan's Nikkei 225 slumped 4.8 per cent on worries the country's incoming government will support higher interest rates and other policies that investors see as less market-friendly. Stellantis NV tumbled 14.7 per cent in Milan after cutting its forecast for upcoming profit. It cited investments to turn around its U.S. operations and increased Chinese competition. Ford and GM also dropped.
