Globe/wire say TSX has day off, Wall Street ends mixed

2024-12-27 09:07 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that stock indexes drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street Thursday, as some heavyweight technology and communications sector stocks offset gains elsewhere in the market. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says the S&P 500 fell less than 0.1 per cent after spending the day wavering between small gains and losses. The tiny loss ended the benchmark index's three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1 per cent. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. Canadian markets were closed Thursday for the Boxing Day holiday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2 per cent. Meta Platforms fell 0.7 per cent and Amazon and Netflix each fell 0.9 per cent. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, finishing 1.8 per cent lower. All told, the S&P 500 fell 2.45 points to 6,037.59.
