The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the S&P/TSX Composite Index closed down 231.41 points at 24,536.32 Monday, weighed down by losses in energy, technology and utilities. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says the Dow rose 358.67 points to 42,297.12, while the Nasdaq composite lost 73.53 points to 19,088.10. U.S. Treasury yields stayed elevated and investors dialled back expectations on the pace of rate cuts from central banks. Recent U.S. economic data have indicated a resilient economy with nagging price pressures, which has pressured equities. Comments from Federal Reserve officials have pushed bond yields higher. Promised tariffs from president-elect Donald Trump have also fuelled worries about inflation. U.S. Treasury yields edged higher on Monday, with the benchmark 10-year note yield touching a 14-month high of 4.805 per cent. The Canadian 10-year yield was up 6.5 basis points at 3.507 per cent, its seventh straight day of increases and its highest level since July 9. Markets are pricing in about 27 basis points of cuts from the Fed this year, with a 52.9-per-cent chance for a June cut. For Canada, they are pricing in about 37 basis points of more cuts from the Bank of Canada this year.
