The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Canada's main stock index rose on Monday, boosted by gold stocks as bullion prices climbed. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says that meanwhile, investors weighed new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods days after negotiations broke down last week. Canada will impose tariffs on some U.S. goods starting Sept. 8 in retaliation. President Donald Trump also said on Monday that U.S. tariffs on all cars and trucks, automotive parts and steel will be increased to 50 per cent starting Jan. 1, 2027. The materials group rose 1.4 per cent as gold hit a three-month high against a subdued dollar, while investors awaited U.S. inflation data and remarks from Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh this week. I-80 Gold, Seabridge and NovaGold were up between 6.8 per cent and 10.5 per cent. The heavyweight energy sector was the biggest drag on the index, falling 0.9 per cent as oil prices slipped.
