Globe/wire say TSX recovers slightly, up 103 points

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canada's benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 103.52 points at 35,145.38, after Wednesday's 1.7-per-cent decline -- its lowest closing level since July 20. An AP/Reuters dispatch to The Globe says U.S. stocks felt pressure from a 4.1-per-cent rise in the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil to $104.28 (all figures U.S.). It has been pinballing between $96 and $110 over the past month on uncertainty about when the war with Iran will allow the global energy industry to return to normal. Brent got to nearly $106 in the morning before U.S. Donald Trump sent its price veering after saying "productive discussions" are happening with Iran and that the U.S. military would not attack it before the upcoming U.S. elections in November. The 10-year Treasury yield initially rose with oil prices, going from 5.28 per cent late Wednesday to 5.35 per cent early Thursday morning. But it then fell to 5.23 per cent. It dropped after the U.S. government said that it sold $22-billion in 30-year Treasury bonds at an auction with a high yield of less than 5.62 per cent. For their part, Canadian bond yields were relatively unchanged late Thursday from Wednesday's levels.
