Globe/wire say TSX gets boost from banks, telcos

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Canada's main stock index rose on Tuesday, helped by gains for financial and telecom stocks, as oil pulled back from its highest level since April and investors looked ahead to a more seasonally favourable period for the market. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 179.33 points at 36,107.96. "You are entering one of the best seasonal periods of the year. November and December are historically pretty rewarding months, especially given the current environment that is really oversold from a breadth perspective," said Sid Mokhtari, chief market technician for CIBC Capital Markets. U.S. crude oil futures settled 1.8 per cent lower at $101.79 (U.S.) a barrel as traders weighed a meeting between the Iranian President and Pakistan's army chief, a key U.S.-Iran mediator, against continued Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure. The move in oil helped lower interest rates, noted Mr. Mokhtari, adding, "You bring rates lower then you start buoying the utilities and telcos -- things that were hit hard with the recent rise in rates." The Canadian 10-year yield eased 6.8 basis points to 3.894 per cent after rising sharply on Monday.
