The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a mediocre 60-67-183 as the TSX Venture Exchange rose one point to 755. Yet another week has passed without a major move or readjustment to Paul Zimnisky's global rough diamond price index, but yes, Mr. Optimist, if you squint firmly and hold your tongue just right, you can divine a hint of a slow but steady rise since the start of spring. This week, the index added 0.2 point, to 127.5 points.

The flattish stretch now runs for over six months, with Mr. Zimnisky's horizontal dashed line -- one of many metaphorical lines of defence that he dug along his chart over the past three years -- looking to ward off an attack by the forces of gloom and doom. All his other trenches were overrun within a month or two, but this one appears to be holding: Indeed, it now dominates the chart much like those that dominated the landscape of northeastern France during the First World War. And so, Mr. Zimnisky has rough diamond prices up 0.9 per cent over the past three months and 1.3 per cent over the past six months.
