The critical and specialty minerals stocks box score was a bleak 57-119-134 on Wednesday as the TSX Venture Exchange fell eight points to 858. It is not just the hottest diamond stock around -- it is the only hot diamond stock around. Southstone Minerals Ltd. (SML), freed from a nearly three-year halt this week, bolted from one cent to three cents Monday and to five cents yesterday. Today, it added one-half cent to 5.5 cents on 3.11 million shares, getting as high as 7.5 cents in intraday trading. Southstone mines alluvial diamonds at Oena, in South Africa.

Guy Bourassa's chatty scandium promotion, Scandium Canada Ltd. (SCD), was unchanged at 17 cents on 1.49 million shares. The company was back on its promotional horse Tuesday, cheering "key findings" of an updated market study that it commissioned -- an independent study, it wants you to know -- that has apparently been mellowing in Scandium Canada's hands for over a month. It had the study updated for two reasons -- to ground the assumptions of the prefeasibility study of its Crater Lake scandium project in Quebec, and also as part of the due diligence conducted for last month's acquisition of Ferreol Technologies.
