New York spot gold leapt $69.60 on Monday, pausing for air at the rarified altitude of $3,828.30. The TSX Venture Exchange tagged along, adding 8.89 points to 942.84, while the TSX gold index added 3.81 points to 728.44. Most Canadian precious metals miners moved higher, with Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) leading the way with a 70-cent gain to $15.73 on 7.36 million shares. Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU), on the other hand, lost five cents to $3.09 on 2.44 million shares.

Luis Albano Tondo's Jaguar Mining Inc. (JAG) did poorly, dropping 37 cents to $5.65 on 2.37 million shares on word it is offering 4.54 million shares at $5.50 apiece, seeking $25-million to restart its Turmalina mine in Brazil. As usual, the underwriters have a greenshoe option, allowing them to buy an additional $3-million of shares -- and given the discount they likely will. Retail investors, on the other hand, invoked the "you-pay-what-we-pay strategy" savaging Jaguar's market price.
