New York spot gold was back at it today, sustaining a relentless drive toward the unthinkable $4,000 mark as it added $74.70 to $3,959.70 by the afternoon pause. The TSX Venture Exchange leapt as well, adding 25.94 points to 989.98, while the TSX gold index surged 10.72 points to 753.20. Oh, where to start: Well, Orvana Minerals Corp. (ORV) added 25 cents to 97 cents on 2.25 million shares and McEwen Inc. (MUX) added $1.25 to $25.48 on 347,000 shares. On the other hand, Imperial Metals Corp. (III) -- yes, it is more copper than gold -- dipped 23 cents to $6.39 on 225,000 shares today.

Barrick Mining Corp. (ABX) continues to perplex. It added 13 cents to $47.50 on 10.81 million shares today on word it is selling its Tongon gold mine in Ivory Coast, along with associated exploration properties, to Atlantic Group for up to $305-million (U.S.). Atlantic, a private company founded nearly 50 years ago by a local entrepreneur, looks to keep the mine running. Tongon, which held its first gold pour in 2010, had been slated for closure five years ago, but the surging price of gold kept it going.
