And we thought Wednesday's great leap forward was an eye-popper! Shortly after the afternoon catnap, bullion surged anew, getting within a few dollars of the $5,600 mark in the wee hours of this morning. The market stabilized for several hours, then wow gave way to woe, as gold plunged $330 (U.S.) within minutes. All was not lost -- just some -- with New York spot gold taking its Thursday break at $5,379, down $35 on the day. The TSX Venture Exchange, on the other hand, crumbled 39.81 points to 1,108.29 and the TSX gold index fared worse, crashing 45.66 points to 1,012.69.

Would you believe there were some northbound golds today: Taseko Mines Ltd. (TKO) added 40 cents to $11.62 on 2.64 million shares and TRX Gold Corp. (TRX) leapt to $3.75 before ending the day up 36 cents to $2.95 on 3.34 million shares. Both were as quiet as two submarines slinking beneath a squadron of enemy destroyers. Equally mum, but meekly tracking southward with bullion were Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG), which lost $6.57 to $75.98 on 1.97 million shares, and Iamgold Corp. (IMG), which slid $1.80 to $28.11 on 6.15 million shares.
