New York spot gold rose $18 Wednesday, taking a break at $4,963.80. The TSX Venture Exchange started well then flopped, but recovered a bit, ending the day down 14.24 points to 1,038.48. The TSX gold index also bounced about, but added 8.02 points to 942.3. Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (ASM) lost 25 cents to $14.33 on 1.9 million shares, while Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) fell 10 cents to $1.09 on 1.54 million shares. Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) managed to add $4.86 to $191.49 on 2.15 million shares.

John McCluskey's Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) jumped $3.17 to $55.40 on 5.53 million shares on a flurry of news late yesterday and this morning. First, Alamos applauded an expansion study for its Island gold mine in Northern Ontario. The study proposes expanding the Magino mill to 20,000 tonnes per day, which would be fed by 17,000 tonnes of open-pit ore and 3,000 tonnes of high-grade underground ore per day. The plant currently runs at about 12,400 tonnes per day.
