New York spot gold gained some ground late today, taking its siesta at $4,473.30, up $67.20 on the day. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 8.67 points to 938.98 while the TSX gold index added 8.42 points to 816.70. Even so, those glorious days of yore -- yore being just three weeks ago -- when both indices duelled for supremacy near the 1,120-point mark, are just a fond memory for gold bugs.

A few Canadian gold miners still suffered another down day. Americas Gold and Silver Corp. (USA) lost 13 cents to $7.95 on 2.37 million shares and Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) fell nine cents to $17.30 on 4.44 million shares. There were a few brighter spots: GoGold Resources Inc. (GGD) leapt 14 cents to $2.49 on 6.19 shares. It, like the two in retreat, had nothing new to say today.

Robert Eadie's Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) rose two cents to 71 cents on 703,000 shares on word that it is selling its Ajax property in northwestern British Columbia to Korestar Exploration Inc., a private British Columbia company. Starcore will get 2.5 million Korestar shares and $100,000 in cash, and the buyer is committing to spending $200,000 on exploration in stages over a three-year period. Starcore also gets a 2.5-per-cent net smelter return royalty on the property.
