West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery added 61 cents to $63.30 on the New York Merc, while Brent for November added 45 cents to $67.44 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.10 to WTI, down from a discount of $11.50. Natural gas for October added 10 cents to $3.04. The TSX energy index added 2.15 points to close at 284.26.
Oil sands producer MEG Energy Corp. (MEG) lost one cent to $28.75 on 1.24 million shares, after rejecting a revised (but still hostile) takeover bid from Adam Waterous's Strathcona Resources Ltd. (SCR), down 68 cents to $36.79 on 132,100 shares. As discussed last week, Strathcona switched from a cash-and-share offer to a higher all-share offer while promising a special distribution once the deal went through. Unpersuaded, MEG issued a statement today in which it continued to urge shareholders to reject the "fundamentally unattractive" bid.
