West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery lost 13 cents to $57.95 on the New York Merc, while Brent for February lost two cents to $61.92 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.30 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.40. Natural gas for February (new front month) lost one cent to $3.97. The TSX energy index added 4.05 points to close at 301.58.

The oil patch had a quiet day amid the pre-New Year's news lull. One company with an extra reason to pop champagne is Grant Fagerheim's Whitecap Resources Inc. (WCP), up 11 cents to $11.61 on 4.52 million shares. In the latest batch of monthly industry data showing the top oil- and liquids-producing wells in Western Canada, Whitecap clinched the top spot for November with an Elmworth Montney well that flowed 1,635 barrels a day (not including gas). Another of its Elmworth Montney wells took third place with 1,405 barrels a day. (The silver medal went to a 1,571-barrel-a-day Charlie Lake well drilled by Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd. (TVE: $8.12) at Wembley Lake, while ARC Resources Ltd. (ARX: $25.97) swept the rest of the top 10 with a cluster of Karr Montney wells.)
