West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery added $3.46 to $97.98 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June added $1.17 to $95.92 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $26.40 to WTI, down from a discount of $14.80. Natural gas for May lost five cents to $2.67. The TSX energy index lost 6.38 points to close at 399.12.

Over a choppy trading session, oil prices clawed back some of yesterday's losses as concerns grew about the fragility of the U.S.-Israel-Iran ceasefire. Tehran says several of the terms of the ceasefire have already been breached. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains at a near standstill, with the United States demanding that the strait be fully reopened without delay and Iran suggesting that it intends to start policing transit and charging tolls.

Oil sands giant Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) slipped $1.59 to $87.65 on 18.6 million shares. It was in the headlines after the disclosure of an uncontrolled steam leak -- now resolved -- from a well at Firebag, its largest in situ operation. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is on site investigating the incident, according to a notice on its website. "Release from a well. Misting off lease. The release has been stopped. Cleanup under way," rattled off the regulator briskly. It noted that the mist may contain hydrocarbons, and that some of the mist has landed on the still-frozen and snow-covered Steep Bank River, but so far there are "No impacts to wildlife reported."
