West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery added $2.25 to $103.66, while Brent for December went the other way and lost 31 cents to $109.55 (all figures in this para U.S.). The divergence is largely a technical quirk, reflecting the imminent expiry of the November WTI contract; the more actively traded December contract retreated today with Brent. Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $35.20 to WTI, down from a discount of $29.30. Natural gas for November lost six cents to $3.05. The TSX energy index added 2.50 points to close at 491.52.
TSX energy stocks had another buoyant day in the markets. In Alberta, however, the gains came amid tragedy. Four soldiers were killed and 39 wounded on Saturday after a fire broke out at CFB Wainwright, 210 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. The blaze began as a grass fire before strong winds drove it toward an area where a training exercise was in progress. The Canadian Armed Forces will investigate the incident. Given the amount of on-base oil and gas infrastructure, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is also monitoring the situation. "At this time," said the regulator yesterday, "the AER has not received any reports of incidents involving oil and gas infrastructure and is communicating with operators in the area."
