Copper Mountain Mining Corp. is facing a wrongful dismissal lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia from its former chief financial officer, Rodney Shier, who claims that the company owes him $1.57-million. He says that the company fired him from his $435,160-per-year job for no good reason. He is seeking the court-ordered payment of the money, plus the value of stock-based compensation.

The allegations are contained in a notice of claim that Mr. Shier filed on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Vancouver courthouse. The suit identifies Mr. Shier as a certified public accountant who had been a senior employee of Copper Mountain since its inception. He says that he and his business partner, James O'Rourke, formed the company in 2006. (Mr. O'Rourke was the company's chief executive officer until June 1, 2018, when he retired.)

The suit stems from the events leading up to Mr. Shier's firing, which came on Aug. 23, 2022. At the time, the company had little to say, issuing a two-line news release simply stating that it had terminated Mr. Shier and had replaced him with an interim CFO. Absent from the news release were the kind words and well wishes typically found when an officer departs.
