The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that the federal government said Tuesday that major suppliers will be required to disclose greenhouse gas emissions. The Post's Naimul Karim writes that the policies, which take effect in April, will pertain to deals worth more than $25-million, Treasury Board president Mona Fortier said. Government projects valued at more than $10-million must meet greenhouse gas emissions on concrete that are at least 10 per cent lower than the regional average. Mr. Fortier said: "We are starting with concrete, but we are also looking at how we will include aluminum, steel -- even wood -- as being those materials that will help us in reducing our emissions. There's more to come." Canada's minister of environment and climate change, Steven Guilbeault, said the government's goal is to make net zero a "default business practice." Mr. Guilbeault also launched Canada's Net-zero Challenge, a voluntary initiative that encourages businesses to develop and implement plans to transition away from fossil fuels and reduce their emissions. Forty firms including Microsoft Canada and Aecon Group have already joined, he said. Greenpeace Canada describes the policies as "baby steps."
