The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Ottawa says it will not allow Washington to dictate the terms of talks on renewing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Globe's triple bylined item led by Steven Chase reports that two unnamed sources say the Trump administration has asked Canada to change or eliminate domestic policies, including dairy supply management and bans on American liquor, before talks can begin. Prime Minister Mark Carney says the U.S. does not dictate the terms. He says, "We have a negotiation." Ottawa is also trying to resolve sector-specific tariffs that the Trump administration has placed on a range of goods, including steel, aluminum and autos. One source says the U.S. is satisfied with the current situation, collecting revenue from Section 232 tariffs, and wants to see what more it can gain from Ottawa before negotiations start. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says while there are red lines, there are "solutions to most of what the Americans raise, and we're happy to sit down and go through that with them. But it's got to be part of a larger, more comprehensive arrangement." Little is expected soon as President Donald Trump is currently focused on the war he started in Iran.
