The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plans to meet with his Canadian counterpart this week at a gathering of G20 central bank governors and finance ministers in Asheville, N.C. The Globe's Bill Curry writes that Mr. Bessent on Monday blamed Prime Minister Mark Carney for the breakdown in trade talks. Mr. Carney walked away from "the best trade deal of any country on the globe," according to Mr. Bessent on the first day of the G20 meeting. Mr. Bessent also dismissed talk of a trade war with Canada. He unkindly said what's Canada going to, "take their two-cent submarines from the Edmonton Mall and sic them on us?" In the meantime, Mr. Carney held a virtual meeting Monday with business leaders from 23 companies across various sectors, including agriculture, banking, energy and technology, to discuss recent trade and economic developments. Mr. Bessent's reference to Canadian submarines alludes to the recreational underwater submarine ride that once operated inside the West Edmonton Mall. The ride closed in 2005 and its submarines were removed in 2012. Mr. Carney will address the European Union Parliament in mid-September in hopes of deepening trade ties with the bloc.
