The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that formal trade talks are set to resume between Canada and the United States after Prime Minister Mark Carney described a productive call with President Donald Trump. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that the PM noted the talks built on previous discussions about a potential trade deal. "Our teams will now be working in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome," Mr. Carney said. Mr. Trump said his administration has the "concept" of a new trade deal with Canada but declined to offer details. Formal negotiations are expected to begin in a few days. The talks between the two leaders took place Saturday. Mr. Trump ordered his team to resume formal talks as a result of the conversation. Talks are expected to pick up where they left off in August, when Canada walked away from the negotiations with the two countries deadlocked over matters including automobile trade. The PM said last week that there had been a "slight intensification" concerning trade talks with the U.S., adding that any progress is because Washington is moving closer to Ottawa's position. Brian Clow, who served as deputy chief of staff under Justin Trudeau, cautioned against excessive optimism.
