The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Ottawa and Alberta seem to be nearing an energy agreement. The Globe's Robert Fife and Stephanie Levitz write that according to two sources, Michael Sabia, the Clerk of the Privy Council, is playing a crucial role in the negotiations. The sources say the agreement's broad outlines would be formalized in a memorandum of understanding. It involves an oil pipeline running from Alberta to British Columbia. The proposal includes a limited exemption to the B.C. coast oil tanker ban, changes to industrial carbon pricing, and a reduction or removal of the industrial emissions cap. Federal and Alberta government players are optimistic that a deal could be announced before next weekend's United Conservative Party convention. The negotiations represent a significant shift in the relationship between Alberta and the federal government in Ottawa. This relationship had deteriorated under the previous Trudeau administration due to its approach to energy and environmental policies. However, since taking office, Prime Minister Mark Carney has adopted a more collaborative stance. He is committed to transforming Canada into an energy superpower while also addressing climate change.
