The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that gulf tensions escalated on Wednesday as U.S. military reported thwarted Iranian missile attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait and other targets, amid stalled diplomacy between Washington and Tehran. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that two missiles aimed at Kuwait fell short or disintegrated, while three headed for Bahrain were intercepted. Since late February, Iran has consistently targeted Bahrain and Kuwait, where U.S. military bases are stationed.
Central Command said U.S. forces also downed Iranian drones in regional waters and carried out strikes on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the attempted attacks by Iran.
The conflict is stuck in a stalemate, with a shaky ceasefire in place while the strait remains largely shut to maritime traffic.
Iran and the U.S. announced a tentative agreement to halt the war, but it hasn't been finalized yet. Iranian media reported a lack of communication with Washington, while U.S. President Donald Trump said that negotiations are still ongoing.
At sea, the world's largest shipping group MSC said on Tuesday that one of its vessels was struck by two projectiles while in Iraq's Umm Qasr port the previous day.
