The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Ottawa is pitching Turkey on buying Candu nuclear reactors, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Friday after meeting with her Turkish counterpart in Canada. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Ms. Anand said she toured Ontario's Darlington nuclear generating station Thursday with Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and passed on a letter for the Turkish government from Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson. "This letter expresses Canada's interest in expanding nuclear co-operation with Turkey. ... We see significant opportunities to work together to advance not only energy security, but also economic growth and clean-energy development," Ms. Anand said Friday. Ms. Anand's department in a news release later said the two ministers also discussed increased trade in the defence, aerospace and mining sectors. Turkey and Canada earlier this month launched exploratory discussions regarding a free-trade agreement. Speaking to reporters at an Ottawa news conference Friday with Ms. Anand, the Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister said he sees "significant potential" for his country to benefit from Canadian nuclear technology, now in use in nearby Romania.
