The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that on Thursday, the government announced that Canada is acquiring up to 16 P-8A Poseidon aircraft from the U.S. government and Boeing, with the first deliveries set to begin in 2026. Guest columnist Bill Blair, the Minister of Defence, says that the Poseidon is the right aircraft for Canada, at the right price for Canadians. This platform is a proven capability that is operated by all our Five Eyes allies -- the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to several NATO allies and other partners. The Poseidon is the only currently available aircraft that meets all of our operational requirements and it has a proven record of success. The Poseidon is upgradable and interoperable with our partners and allies. These aircraft are complex weapon systems capable of transporting and launching multiple sono-buoys, torpedoes and anti-ship weapons. Why did we not pursue a Canada-only option? To be clear, says Mr. Blair: There are no aircraft in production in Canada with the integrated command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR), anti-submarine and anti-surface capabilities that our Air Force requires.
