The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that the next big cyberhack might not target your computer, or even your bank card. In a Post special, Mirjam Guesgen writes that the it might be on your car. Cybersecurity experts have warned about the vulnerabilities in connected vehicles -- ones that link up with an app, the Internet or an electric charging station -- for several years. Owners of these vehicles risk having their personal data taken, the car being hijacked while driving or even the power grid the vehicle plugs into shutting down. It seems vehicle manufacturers are paying attention, taking steps to secure vehicles and charging ports in much the same way as computers are protected. However, as vehicles venture further into the digital realm, the threat is far from abated. EVs have received the bulk of the attention because they have more digital components than their petrol-fuelled counterparts. However, many modern vehicles have cybersecurity vulnerabilities. "Between the EV and the charge point it's not just electricity flowing, but information," said Jim Alfred, general manager of applied cryptography group BlackBerry Certicom. In 2022, a 19-year-old hacked into 25 Teslas via a mobile app, Teslamate.
