The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Canada holds its own when it comes to scaling up companies in some tech sectors but lags far behind the United States in terms of "unicorns" -- private companies valued at $1-billion or more -- and bringing them to public markets, according to a new study of Canadian start-ups. The Post's Yvonne Lau writes that the study by Charles Plant, a consultant and co-chief executive officer of Exactblue Technologies, benchmarked Canadian private tech companies with $10-million and more in capital (a category known as scale-ups) against 17,000 statistically relevant start-ups in North America, pinpointing where homegrown start-ups struggle and shine. The data, gleaned from Crunchbase and Linkedin, illuminate the challenges Canada faces in creating "world-class" tech companies. "We can do it from time to time with companies such as Nortel, BlackBerry and Shopify, but we can't do it on a regular basis," Mr. Plant said. He singled out Singapore as a case study to emulate. "For a country one-sixth the size of Canada, they have the same number of unicorns. Instead of focusing envy on the U.S., perhaps we should be trying to figure out how Singapore became so successful," he said.
