The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Bell Canada parent BCE is reducing its work force by nearly 700 employees, the latest in a series of job reductions that have been playing out across the telecom sector. The Globe's Irene Galea writes that the job reductions are affecting BCE employees in various roles across the organization and the country. The telco said Monday it is laying off 460 non-unionized employees, some of which are management, and has offered unionized employees voluntary departure packages with a target of reducing its unionized work force by 230 roles. The company had 38,683 employees as of the end of 2025, 39 per cent of which were unionized. Bell Media will not be affected by the job cuts, the company said. It's the latest round of job losses in the telecom industry, as slower immigration and as lower cellphone plan prices have cut into companies' revenue growth. In May, the company reported higher revenue but lower net earnings for its first quarter, reflecting the addition of its U.S. fibre Internet business and improved media revenue but a decline in its telecom division. Last year it laid off 650 non-unionized employees and 1,200 unionized employees across Canada.
