The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 8, edition that according to chairman Jerome Powell the U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its key interest rate in the coming months as it awaits resolution of the "uncertainty" from President Donald Trump's policies. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Powell said Friday: "While there have been recent developments in some of these areas, especially trade policy, uncertainty around the changes and their likely effects remains high. As we parse the incoming information, we are focused on separating the signal from the noise as the outlook evolves. We do not need to be in a hurry and are well positioned to wait for greater clarity." Most economists say that Mr. Trump's plans to slap tariffs on a wide array of imports will push up prices and slow growth. Many also, however, expect that tax cuts and deregulation could boost the economy. Mr. Powell's comments led traders to reduce forecasts for interest rate cuts, which they had expected to be at least three due to weak U.S. economic reports. Mr. Powell reiterated the Fed is likely on hold for a while. That sent Treasury yields higher in the bond market.
